Funder Tool and Machine Factory moves forward with HSMWorks

One job, that normally took around 20 minutes to calculate, was processed in HSMWorks in just under 5 minutes. "If I could only use one word to describe HSMWorks it would be "speed"," - Funder.

Funder Værktøj og Maskinfabrik ApS (Funder Tool and Machine Factory) is a modern machining firm specializing in injection molds, pressure die casts, punching tools and prototype manufacturing.

Funder Tool and Machine Factory headquarters
situated in Helsinge, Denmark.

The company was founded in 1989 by Jimmy, Kim, Lissi and Kaj Funder. After a generation change in 2007 the company today consists of five competent and dedicated employees led by owners Jimmy and Kim Funder. Through regular investments in machining centers, tooling, and software upgrades Jimmy and Kim Funder have maintained an edge over their competition by staying ahead of the technology and process curve.

Over the years Funder invested in several well known CAD/CAM systems. Up until last year they were satisfied with what they had to work with. However, as more and more customers began providing Funder with part geometry in the form of SolidWorks 3D models, it became obvious that they needed a faster, more efficient way to generate the toolpaths necessary for the machining process. Funder realized that if they could work with the models and also create the toolpaths inside SolidWorks that would be ideal.

Kim Funder commented, "Sometimes the difference between winning and losing a job is measured in days, days to delivery. This means that every minute we can remove from the process; from toolpath generation to machining, is very important. We identified that the need to import SolidWorks files and the time it took to prepare them just to begin to create our toolpaths was taking too long. We evaluated HSMWorks to see if it could give us a competitive advantage in our CAM department, and it did."

Kim Funder explains that integrating HSMWorks into the company's existing
workflow yielded many positive results they had not anticipated.

The first benefit Funder saw with HSMWorks addressed the main reason they began looking at integrated systems in the first place - the ability to create toolpaths directly from the SoildWorks files without having to switch between two applications. This eliminated the time needed and requirement to convert files and manipulate or manage coordinate systems before they could begin working with the models. While Kim and his associates at Funder were impressed with how fast they could begin created toolpaths, that was not the only benefit the found.

Funder were impressed with how fast they could begin created toolpaths, that was not the only benefit they found. "We were very happy with how quickly we were able to begin using HSMWorks. No question. However, once we began using the software we saw how much faster we were able to actually create toolpaths. Not only was the calculation time significantly less than with our other CAM applications, the quality of the toolpaths was also very impressive," stated Kim. "HSMWorks not only opened our eyes to the benefits of the integrated solution approach to CAD/CAM the practical results of better toolpaths and shorter calculation time meant getting parts to our machines faster and then off the machines to our customers faster."

A job which would normally take around 20 minutes to calculate
can now be done in five minutes inside HSMWorks.

One of the biggest benefits Funder found with HSMWorks was the marked reduction in calculation time it took to generate toolpaths. One job, that normally took around 20 minutes to calculate, was processed in HSMWorks in just under 5 minutes. "If I could only use one word to describe HSMWorks it would be "speed"," stated Funder.

When asked what other benefits Funder saw with HSMWorks Kim was quick to list them, "In spite of not having any prior experience with SolidWorks we were able to work effectively with the software almost immediately. We were also very impressed with the control we had over the types of toolpaths we were able to use to machine our parts. And the visualization and simulation HSMWorks provided us with eliminated any questions we had about how the parts would be cut before they were sent to our machines."

Kim and his team are looking forward to using HSMWorks now. They are believers in integrated CAD/CAM and believe they found a competitive advantage that will not only satisfy their existing customers but attract new business.
